Drama and Media Education

Welcome!

This site is a range of educational materials and theory related to
Drama and Media education but also covers other aspects of education.

It exists thanks to Egglescliffe School, the Specialist Schools Trust
and the Stockton on Tees AST programme.

Who am I?

AST FOR DRAMA
STOCKTON-ON-TEES BOROUGH

Anthony Gears MA born in Hindley near Wigan in 1959 and educated at Hindley and Abram Grammar school.

I did a BA in Drama and American Studies (including the study of American Film and Drama) at Aberystwyth, University College of Wales followed by a PGCE in Drama in Education at the City of Birmingham Polytechnic under David Davis. I have worked with Dorothy Heathcote and my external examiner was Gavin Bolton.

I have taught in Stockton on Tees since 1981. I have an RSA Dioploma in Drama in Education and worked with Tony Delzenne and Geoff Davies. I have an MA from Durham University and have worked with Dr. Mike Fleming. I also have an M. Cert in Media Education from the BFI.

I became an AST in Drama for Stockton on Tees in 1999 and the Director of Egglescliffe Arts College in the same year.

I initiated and has been director of Egglescliffe Youth Theatre since 1984.

I have written a number of musicals and contributed to several academic magazines in cluding The Secondary English Magazine. I am an associate lecturer for Durham University where I teach on the PGCE English course.

I was one of the initiators of the Drama Teacher's Association: North (DTA-North) which has been recently rebranded as TEACH DRAMA: North East England (link to new website below).

I have suffered from three attacks of oral cancer in the last five years.

Some of the material on the site may be contentious - if so I am glad it is so as debate always leads to fresh thinking and I do not mind at all being challenged or argued with, so please use the FORUM page or contact me directly. Some of the material may be a little dated as things change so fast these days - or at least appear to even if it is only a trick oif the light and everything stays the same! By keeping things moving in schools we can be tricked into not thinking at all as we are too busy initiating the changes to wonder what they are for!

I hope you enjoy the site if only as an Aunt Sally or Devil's Advocate. (NO the Devil does not drink egg nog read that again!)
